AU moves to rescue abducted Chibock girls

The AU has announced plans to engage the Federal Government and other stakeholders in a meeting, in a fresh move to rescue the more than 200 girls abducted by insurgents in Chibok, Borno.

The AU Special Envoy for Women, Peace and Security, Mrs Benita Diop, made the disclosure at the close of the Conference of Ministers of Social Development in Addis Ababa on Saturday.

Diop, who is to lead a delegation to Abuja on Monday, June 2, is to intimate the Federal Government on the "new approach'' to rescue the girls, abducted on April 14.

The envoy, who addressed the meeting on AU's effort to secure the girls, said the continental body would continue to evolve mechanisms to protect the girl-child through robust policies on education, among others.

The AU Ministers, under the auspices of the Fourth Conference on Social Development convened with stakeholders to review efforts toward ending child marriage in Africa.

The African Union Commission had announced that 39,000 underage girls were sent out for marriage daily in Africa and urged for more efforts to tackle the practise and allow such girls to face their future through adequate education.

The AU had during the just-concluded meeting launched a campaign tagged "End Child Marriage Now'' where it called for urgent measures to tackle the growing spate ohf the cultural practise that had hit the continent with daily record of 39,000 victims.

The campaign would be carried out in 10 selected countries of the continent, where the culture of child marriage is highly practised.

The continental body listed Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Sierra Leone and Zambia among the first set of countries where the campaign would hold.

The campaign is being supported by AU partners, including UNICEF, UNFPA, UNECA, Plan International, the Canadian Government, Save the Children, Africa Child Policy Forum (ACPF) and DFID.

Super Eagles: Keshi confused over final team selection

Players of the Super Eagles have said they don't envy Coach Stephen Keshi at this very difficult period.

They said this after Nigeria's pulsating 2-2 draw against the Tartan Army of Scotland on Wednesday at the Craven Cottage in London.

A statement by the Media Officer of the team, Ben Alaya, reported the Team Skipper, Joseph Yobo, at the post match conference, as saying that if he was the coach, he would find it difficult to drop any of the players currently in the 30-man squad.

"Nigeria is blessed with talents and that is why I think all the players here merit to be in Brazil, even when we have some other very good ones still hanging out.

"If you watch the game against Scotland, you will know that the 'Big boss' needs to be pitied over dropping players and picking those who will make the final 23. It will be tough," Yobo said.

Stoke City's Osaze Odemwingie, on his part, said he was happy at the response of his teammates to his return to the national side.

"But how do we drop players now from this squad. Everybody here is good but we should leave that to the coach but I know it would be a tough task," he said.

In the statement, England-based Shola Ameobi, declared that playing for the Nigerian side had made him a better team player because of the quality of players in camp and wished he had started playing earlier for the team.

"We are all good but we should just pray for the coach to ensure that he picks the best for the World Cup."

Towering defence ace, Azubuike Egwuehwe, put it more succinctly: "When I was going into the match against Scotland, I said to myself O'boy you are on trial; now I know that its our coach who has a really difficult job of picking the 23 players for Brazil 2014."

Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer dies at 85

Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer has died at the age of 85.

The Glazer family purchased United for £790m in May 2005 amid protests from the Premier League club's fans.

However, the Red Devils went on to win five Premier League titles under his ownership, as well as the 2008 Champions League.

The New York-born American's sons, Bryan, Joel and Avram, are all on the United board, with the latter two co-chairmen of the club.

"The thoughts of everyone at Manchester United are with his family tonight," the Premier League club said.

Glazer's death is not expected to have any significant effect on the ownership of United, with the family retaining a 90 per cent share in the club.

Glazer was also the owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, turning the American football franchise into Super Bowl winners following his takeover in 1995.
