We didn’t give ASUU ultimatum – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has weekend, said his government did not give the  Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, an ultimatum to resume work or be sacked.

Fielding questions from newsmen at the expanded caucus meeting of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party held  at Government House, Yenagoa,  the President said, the Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision of  the Committee of Vice Chancellors.

"We didn't give them ultimatum; it was the Committee of Vice Chancellors that took that decision. The Supervising Minister of Education only passed on the decision."

Jonathan also said the strike embarked upon by the  ASUU  was no longer a trade dispute , but a  subversive action.

He said, "What ASUU is doing is no longer trade union. I have intervened in other labour issues before now, once I invite them they respond and after the meeting they take decision and call off the strike.

"At times we don't even give them a long notice,unlike, in the case of ASUU that was given four days notice before the meeting. As you are meeting to resolve trade disputes, you expect the trade unions to get their officials ready.

"What was expected having met with the highest authorities in the land for long hours, was for ASUU to immediately issue statement within 12 or latest 24 hours , to state their position whether they were accepting government's offer or not. And if they are not accepting they should state the reason for that."

"But despite the fact that I had the longest meeting with ASUU in my political history, we did not start that meeting until around 2:00pm and the meeting ended the next day in the early hours.  As far as the government of Nigeria was concerned, all the critical people that should be in a meeting were there, so what else do they want?

"After that they didn't meet until one week, despite the fact that you met with the highest authority. It was unfortunate one of them, Prof. Iyayi died.

"The way ASUU has conducted the matter shows they are extreme and when Iyayi died, they now said the strike was now indefinite, our children have been at home for over five months."

ASUU Strike: FG Deploys Policemen to Federal Universities to Force Resumption

The Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar, has been directed by the Federal Government to deploy policemen to all federal universities in the country in its bid to ensure resumption of academic activities in universities on or before December 4.

This development was disclosed at an emergency meeting the Federal Government held with all vice-chancellors of federal universities at the National Universities Commission building in Abuja on Friday.

Chief Nyesom Wike, the Acting Minister of Education, and the Executive Secretary of the NUC, Prof Julius Okojie, were also at the meeting.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, revealed that the Federal Government directed the IG to draft policemen to federal universities to prevent members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities from disturbing some of their members that might want to resume work in line with government's directive.

The closed door meeting also discussed other modalities for calling off the bluff of ASUU whose members have been on strike for over five months.

The meeting held Friday from 9am lasted for two hours. In the meeting's agenda was also deliberations on how to recruit new lecturers to fill the space of ASUU members who might refuse to obey government's directive.

The vice-chancellors were also directed to call students back to campus on Sunday in preparation for academic activities which should are expected to begin this Monday.

An order by Wike had required the lecturers to resume duties on or before December 4 or face immediate sack by the Federal Government.

Okojie had already been mandated to begin the recruitment process of new lecturers by placing vacancy adverts in international journals and media.

In addition, the vice-chancellors were instructed to open registers in their institutions where members of ASUU that resume work would sign so that those who failed to resume could be sacked.

It also emerged that the Federal Government was planning to adopt the Ghanaian method where lecturers were asked to re-apply for their jobs after two years of strike.

"Not all lecturers are members of ASUU. Most professors don't belong to the union; people think every lecturer in public university is a member of ASUU, which is not true.

"Government means business this time around and it is going to call off the bluff of ASUU,'' the source explained.

Public Nigerian universities currently suffer a deficit of at not less than 30,000 lecturers.

Peter Okoye & Lola Omotayo's Authentic Love Story - Why She Wedded Him Despite Their Age Difference

Peter Obumneme Okoye of P-Square and Lola Omotayo's love story is compelling and amazing.The couple have been in a relationship for over eight years before they finally tied the knot on Sunday, November 17, 2013.

In an interview with ENCOMIUM Weekly in April 2008, the then Business development Director, FK:G2 (a top marketing outfit) had poured out her heart about her relationship with Peter:

My agency handles some of British American Tobacco brands and P-Square was doing a show for us at one of our events in Enugu. Though I had met Peter a couple of times before then, at the show there was some chemistry. 

He asked for my number and I refused giving it to him. I told him if you really want to know me, you have to find my number. So he took it as a task and found my number and the rest is history."

Lola, said to be 35 back then, and the popular singer in his 20s, was not disturbed by the age difference. 

Her defence:

Like I said, Peter is an old soul and he always tells me that I'm like a 23-year old. Age is just a number. Right now, you can see it around the world. Demi Moore, Usher and some known people. Even in Nigeria here, they are dating people far older than their age. So, we shouldn't base it on the age factor. He doesn't make me feel like he's younger than me."

On the future of their relationship, Lola who now has two children for the music super star had also told ENCOMIUM Weekly, she is not really particular about marriage.

The truth is I'm not particular about marriage. Marriage is not something you rush into. To me, it is over rated in Nigeria.  

Here, they say marriage completes a woman, but I don't believe in that. There is so much that completes a woman and marriage is not it. I've never focused on that. I'm not the little girl who dreams of her wedding day. I'm not afraid to be alone.  

I pray, I am not going to end up alone for the rest of my life, I want a life partner. But the tag, marriage is not something I think is the ultimate. I would take my time rather than rush into marriage only to later discover that it is not what to expect. 

And Peter, as well, is dealing with his own career and he wants to focus on that. And you know, may be in a year's time, I would be ready to get marriage and if he's not ready then, we get to go our separate ways. The truth of the matter is that marriage is not in the picture for me right now."

Lola further narrated how she was struck by cupid's arrow: she confessed they were friends for a while before they got intimate: 

"Not that long. He was too fine, so I had to kiss him. In the beginning, we were coming from different walks of life and there were later adjustments. When I'm into something, I'm into it, 100 percent. People just look at the social status thing. He's an entertainer, she's a career girl, but it's not about that. He's not the first artist I've dated, not a Nigerian though. He was an international act."

Peter of P-Square had always told his family and friends it is either Lola or nobody. Even when a former beauty queen and a struggling rapper allegedly got romantically involved with him, he had to disown her for the sake of his love for Lola Omotayo.


Despite their different cultural backgrounds and career paths, the popular artiste's love for Lola did not wane. Even when she got pregnant with their first baby, he didn't shy away from his responsibility.

"The pregnancy is mine and nothing on earth can make me deny it. After all, I didn't impregnate a street girl. The person carrying my baby is an independent and responsible lady who I love with all my heart. So, the baby is mine and I'm proud to be the father. As for marriage, I don't have plans for it yet." 

Pretty Lola Omotayo, a native of Osogbo in Ifelodun local government of Osun State has obviously got more than she bargained for from her more than eight year romance with the Anambra-born Peter Okoye.

“I Didn't Even Cum!” - Man, 45, Arrested For Raping 75-year-old Woman In Ekiti

A 45-year-old farmer, Lawrence Adedapo, is now in Police custody for allegedly forcibly having carnal knowledge of a 75-year-old woman, Grace Asaolu, at Ogbese Camp, Ise-Ekiti in Ise-Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

According to Vanguard, Adedapo had invited the old lady to his house on November 7 this year under the pretence that he had some plantain from his farm for sale.
Only for him to take advantage of the old woman's fragile nature, overpowered her and had sex with her.

Telling her story, the victim said:

"Lawrence Adedapo is my neighbour. He invited me to come and collect plantain but instead he pushed me on his children's bed and forcefully had carnal knowledge of me. I later rushed to the police station to report the matter."

Upon interrogation, the suspect confirmed that he had carnal knowledge of the woman but denied forcing her, claiming that she was his mistress.
He said:

"I knew her long time ago. I knew her as a widow from Moba Local Government Area of the state. We have known each other for the past 35 years and I have been dating her for long.
The last time I had sex with her was in April during Easter before meeting her again on November 7. That was the second time we met this year. 
I did not force her into it and I had her consent before doing it".

Asked why she reported the matter to the police, Adedapo said:

"I promised to give her N2,000 which she asked for before we did it. But after the sex I was able to give her N1,000 only. That could be the reason why she alleged that I raped her. 
I later found out that she was bleeding as a result of the sex.
I did not even ejaculate because I used my children's room, so I had to rush."

However, the police image maker in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, ASP, insisted that the investigation carried out by the police revealed that the old woman was actually raped by the suspect.He said:

"In the course of investigation, facts emerged that the suspect knew the victim to be of old age, 75, and in menopause.She could not have been bleeding without tampering with her organ. Medical report shows that there was a violent sexual assault on her; she was also said to be distressed with her genital smeared with fresh blood. It shows that he invited the woman with criminal intent to have intercourse with her.

ASUU strike: Ekiti students seek divine intervention

ADO EKITI — Students of Ekiti State origin in tertiary institutions embarked on marathon prayers to seek divine intervention in the five- month old strike by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities, ASUU.

The students, who were drawn from the various institutions of higher learning converged at Lady Jibowu Hall, Ekiti Government House where they held the prayer session

The session had in attendance, the state's Deputy Governor, Professor Modupe Adelabu and some clerics. Adelabu in  her remarks cautioned the students against taking to the streets and engaging in illegal acts that could lead to violence and  disruption of peace in the state.

She noted that they did the right thing by taking their petition to God. She said it was unfortunate that both parties to the dispute – ASUU and the Federal Government  – had remained adamant despite interventions from well-meaning Nigerians.

The number two citizen of the state urged the students not to relent in their regular prayer for divine intervention, saying that the death of Prof Festus Iyayi, a frontline ASUU member in an auto-crash along the Abuja-Lokoja Road introduced another twist to the lingering dispute.

Mrs Adelabu, who expressed the hope that the prayers of the students would yield the desired result in a matter of days, counseled the undergraduates against engaging in activities that could jeopardize their future.

Mrs Adelabu regretted that  the situation which keeps them at home in the past few months was not their own making and that their teachers did not deliberately embark on the strike to put the students' future at stake.

According to her, the lecturers were only pressing for their rights and other logistics that will improve the facilities in the nation's citadel of leaning and to make them world standard.

Advising the students to engage themselves in profitable ventures, she also urged them not to completely abandon their studies but constantly review their lecture notes in preparation for the re-opening of the varsities.

Pastor John Aladete in his sermon at the prayer session urged the students not to be daunted by their present predicament as a result of the protracted ASUU strike.

The cleric charged them to be hopeful with an assurance that God will be with them irrespective of the present development. He said God has designed their generation to bring the desired change needed by the country.

The students were later led into series of prayer sessions by some clerics including the Government House Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Anthony Famuagun, Pastor Tunde Akinola of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youths, Pastor Mike Awopetu and Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, Mr
Adeoye Aribasoye.

ASUU dismisses FG’s threat to sack lecturers

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said the Federal Government's December 4 ultimatum issued to universities teachers to return to the classrooms is a clear indication that the government is not committed to implementing any of the resolutions it reached with the union.

While reacting to the threat of the Federal Government to sack the lecturers if they fail to call off their five-month strike by Wednesday nest week, ASUU National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, said the union was shocked that the government could have such plan when there was a shortfall of 60,000 lecturers in Nigerian universities, owing to the government's failure to employ enough teachers.

He added that the threat would not hinder the union's determination to ensure that Nigerian universities were well funded.

He said, "It is a pity if the Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached with the union. This is why we find it difficult to trust our leaders by their words. How can someone be threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000? We are not in a military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut the universities; it was the school management that ordered the students to go back home."

ASUU added that the FG was wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country by failing to perfect the resolutions so that classes could resume in the schools.

Making reference to the failure of the government to honour the agreements it entered with resident doctors and health workers after they suspended their strikes, the union said it had reasons to be wary of the government, adding that the threat was an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting for the government for a positive reaction.

"With the latest action, the government has shown that it is not committed to all it has been saying. We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200bn is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigerian. We are already in November and December is around the corner. If they don't do that now, when do they want to do it?" Aremu said

Asari Dokubo released

Leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volounteer Force, Mujahid Dokubo-Asari, has been released by security officials in Benin Republic.

Dokubo-Asari was arrested in the neighbouring country on Tuesday, his lawyer Festus Keyamo, said.

Keyamo confirmed the release on Thursday morning.

The ex-militant was said to have been released at about 1am Nigerian time on Thursday.

It could not be confirmed, however, if the Niger Delta warlord was flown to Abuja in a presidential jet as sources at the airport said.

Keyamo had on Wednesday evening asked President Goodluck Jonathan to intervene and ensure the armed activist was released from Benin.
